Unhappy New Cars

First off, the reason I haven't been around is because my Grandfather had a stroke last week and on Friday passed on. It sucks because he was really active and pretty healthy for a 77 year old. He was always a car person and for his entire life only owned Fords, and he owned some good ones too. I'm not able to remember them all, but a few are: a 34 Ford, a couple Model A's, a Falcon, a Fairlane, a F100, a few others, a Ranger, and lastly twin 1973 Mavericks. I always liked how he didn't really like Mustangs all that much. He was one of my favorite people, and hopefully he got the answers to the questions him and I used to talk about.

Now the reason I'm posting this is because of the last two cars on that list, the Mavericks. My brother and I had always discussed with him about how much we liked them and how we had always wanted to eventually own them. Sadly I didn't think it would be this soon that that would happen. My Grandmother decided to give me one and my brother the other. I guess I'll start off with the Green one.

It is a 1973 Ford Maverick 4 door sedan, with a 2 barrel 302 putting out a jaw dropping 138 hp, c4 trans, 2.79 rear, power steering, manual brakes, 8" drums all around, and the rarest of the interior options. This was called the Luxury Decor Option and included bucket seats and a different dash. The color is called Medium Green Metallic, and it has a vinyl roof. It was built in September of 72 and is number 6,366 off the line. It was built in Kansas city and delivered to Philly. I know all of this because I looked it all up for him a couple years ago. This car is the one he has actually owned the longest of any of his cars. He never bought a new one, but this one he bought in 1983 as a surprise Christmas present for my Grandmother. They used it as a daily for the next 22 years until my Grandmother got her Sable. All of those years of driving and it never gave them any issues and only has 86,000 miles on it. It is in really nice shape, he took really good care of it. It really doesn't have any rust on it anywhere as far as I could tell. Now for a few pictures:













I'll have to edit it later on to put in the pic of the front. As far as plans for this car, its a very small list. My brother wants to keep it as original as possible and the only things it will probably get are power disc brakes all around, and that's probably it. The blue one, on the other is a different story.

He had always wanted a parts car for the Green Maverick, so around 2004, I think, he finally found a clone of it and bought it. The Blue Maverick is also a 1973 4 door 302. It has the same 2 barrel 302, c4 trans, 3.00 rear, but doenst have the LDO option. This one has just the standard blue dash and blue bench seat. It's color is Blue Glow and also has a vinyl top, well whats left of it. It was built in St. Thomas, Canada in June of 73, is number 200,189, and was also delivered to Philly. Same brakes and power steering as the Green Maverick, but this one has 138k miles. This one is in much worse shape than the Green one, but is fixable. It will need some quarter panel work, front driver's side fender, driver's door, and well some other stuff. Its just easier to say it needs some help. You'll see in the pics:









This is the one him and I used to talk about all the time, and we had decided not too long ago to start fixing it. I got all the vinyl off the roof and had started cleaning it up. Then after all this happened last week I decided I would get my little cousins to help me with it, so we all went to town cleaning it up. It turned out pretty good. Odd story with this car, the only video I have of the Red Camaro running with a 3.4 is the one where we used it to jump this Maverick. As far as plans for this car, it will be getting disc brakes all around, not sure if I wanna keep the 5.slow thinking ls1 t56, body work, same blue glow paint, no vinyl roof, suspension goodies, much bigger rims and tires, and some other stuff.

I guess I should give a brief history lesson on them since I doubt many of you know what they are. The Maverick was started in 1970 and went through until 1977. It was a compact car designed to be an import of the day fighter. It was available in a few different configurations, 2 door, 2 door Grabber, Sprint, and the 4 door. It had a bunch of I6 engines and the 302, and choice between 3 speed manual or the c4. It never really caught on here in the US, but it is popular in Brazil to this day, and it also appeared in Fast 5. It had a sister car on the same platform as it which was the Mercury Comet, but I don't know much about them.

This will be no quick project, but I'll update it as things happen. I will say it again, my Grandfather was my favorite person to chat with, and was a really smart guy. It's gonna suck not having him around. John Bernhart

Man that suck to get a car that way. But as long as you have them you'll always have a part of him. I love those ol mavs. You should build up that 302 to a 348 with a tunnel ram and two fours and hilborn scoop sticking out of the hood. Awesome cars, sad story.

I too lost my grandfather recently (years). I know the empty void thats left. I will have to say i wasn't as close to my grandfather.... family separation and all. But its nice to have something to honor your grandfather with..... something to pass down. Good luck on the restore. Have fun with it!!

Good luck with the cars, it sucks it had to happen this way though. That would be an awesome sleeper if you kept it looking close to original.

The blue one will look pretty original, but it will get a grabber hood, grabber spoiler, and the thinner bumpers.

Its about as far as its going to get where it sits now. When I get it back to my house I can start replacing brakes, and all of the other stuff.
