Default Replacing Keys

Has anyone here ever had to replace ignition or door keys before? I called a Chevy dealer, but they said I would have to call a locksmith because they wouldn't be able to make keys for anything more than 10 years old. The only locksmith near me is asking for $255 to replace the keys, which seems too pricey. Does anyone have any advice?

i had the dealer make another set but mine wasn't more than 10 years old. Looks like you are going to have to find a new lock/ignition with keys.

ebay has some options but it looks like it will still cost you about 100-150 in parts and several hours to install.

Do you have the original keys and are just trying to make copies?
Or are you starting from scratch?

I have 1 original ignition key. I don't have the key for the door/trunk/T-tops. I mainly need the to replace the door keys so I can lock the car.

you can make a copy of the ignition key, the only issue is you will have to bypass the VATS with a resistor. That is pretty easy to do it just requires a multimeter to measure the chip in the key to be able to pick the correct resistor.

it might be worth it to shop around. there may be another locksmith that is cheaper. Maybe online somewhere they can cut you some keys.

255 is quite high IMO but im not a locksmith so idk what all is required.

With no door key, you will certainly need a locksmith.
For the ignition, eBay sells the OEM keys. You can use a VOM to get the correct resistance for your particular key, or as Dustin said, you can bypass the VATS altogether.

you can get new lock sets for the doors and trunk but you will have to swap them out. ebay has complete sets. idk if they include t-top locks or not. im sure you can find them though. you may have to settle for having a different key to the t-tops
