I go to leave tonight and my stinkin' Check Engine light is on. The car feels a little sluggish too.

What will it be this time? :banghead: This always happens right around emissions time...like clockwork.

Yea probably an o2, or one of 2000 other sensors. im sure glad their are no emissions tests here. not cat ftmfw!

what would happen if you passed emissions, cut the cat or what ever, then when the inspections came back around, put it back in?

freakv6
09-04-2008, 09:55 PM
not a dang thing. i know a few friends from emissions states that do just that.

Well, I'm gonna go run the codes. I'll letcha know what it is. Cheap I hope.

i think this was more of just a general disgust for car problems, and not so much a technical thread.

Yes... I was just bitching about it, not asking for help. ...yet.

don't worry...i sent the "bus" to help you out. should be there in a bit

The "bus"?

Well, I'm getting the code P0420, which is Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. Sounds like the cat to me. I cleared the code and the light didn't come back on, so maybe I'll get lucky and it was just a fluke.

when my other car had the 0420, it would come back after about a week of driving. Your cat is done dude. :(

What's the life expectancy of a MagnaFlow cat, 'cause it ain't that old.

tmon930
09-07-2008, 06:57 PM
less than a !cat.

!cat ftw!

Bonemaro
09-07-2008, 09:33 PM
!cat if you don't mind killing the environment a little more. Doesn't fly with my emissions anyway.

How old is it? Are you running rich?

freakv6
09-08-2008, 10:09 AM
Yea i believe the life on them is not near as long as a factory cat. How long have you had it, still a chance its under warranty?

Actually, it's probably been a few years and yes, I think I am running a tad rich. Perhaps I have killed it. We'll see if the light comes back on.

freakv6
09-08-2008, 10:34 AM
Yea i would put my money on it being dead. Im glad to be rid of that problem.

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 01:31 PM
Well shit... driving this morning and the light comes back on, like I'm surprised. I pretty much knew it would, but there was a little hope in my ever optimistic brain that I'd be ok.

So, P0420 - Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. What are the odds that it's something other than the cat. Are there ways to test?

freakv6
09-18-2008, 01:32 PM
Odds are it is the cat. their is also a slim chance it is the post cat 02 sensor.

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 01:37 PM
Is there a way to check the O2 sensor?

freakv6
09-18-2008, 02:26 PM
http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/O2_Sensor.html

down towards the bottom. can test it in or out of car.

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 02:48 PM
Hmm... I'll have to take time to ingest the theory behind this. Sounds a little tricky to this mechanical ne'erdowell.

freakv6
09-18-2008, 02:57 PM
yea i hated dealing with o2's...thats why i got the guy that tunes my car to just delete the codes. never have to worry with them again.

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 03:14 PM
Delete the codes you say...

Travis@gvperformance
09-18-2008, 03:16 PM
yea if you have an aftermarket cat then get the codes deleted so they don't pop the SES light

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 03:25 PM
I do have a MagnaFlow cat. Where does one get the codes deleted. Is this even legal?

freakv6
09-18-2008, 03:35 PM
Have to get someone with HP tuners, or DHP to do it. as for the legality of it, they will never know, so it wouldn't be a problem.

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 03:57 PM
I know no such person, so sounds like I'm SOL in that department.

you need to make some friends then homebody :p

If you were around here I could do it :(

there are o2 sims out there as well from CASPER that tease the PCM into thinking it is all working good

freakv6
09-18-2008, 04:05 PM
The other option is to pick up and o2 simulator. i don't know how strict GA emissions are though, do they do a sniffer test, or just a odbII?

Bonemaro
09-18-2008, 04:32 PM
OBDII. How do those simulators effect gas mileage or power output? What exactly is the sim doing?

freakv6
09-18-2008, 04:42 PM
The simulator is telling the computer that the 02's levels are in the normal range, it does this by basically acting like a big resitor (you can actually make your own). as far as gas mileage, it will stay the same as your getting now. Power will not be effected either. basically all your doing is paying for a little box to turn the SES light off. If you anything like me though, i cant stand that light being on, so I had to do something.

Bonemaro
10-23-2008, 09:19 PM
Ok, here's the deal. I installed the O2 Sim and 20 hours later, the SES light comes back on. Same code: P0420.

So assuming the 02 Sim is working, that would rule out the final O2 sensor and the CAT.

Any thoughts?

The freakyness is effecting the bone lol

freakv6
10-23-2008, 09:44 PM
hmm you had the code reset prior to putting the sim in correct? as in you cleared the code, drove for a while, then put the sim on. if so i would think it might be possible for the code to have already set.

Need For Steve
10-24-2008, 02:34 PM
yea, sounds like it could have reset itself prior to install

Bonemaro
10-24-2008, 02:55 PM
It was the code for the pre cat sensor this time.

looks like you might have to replace all of the o2 sensors...

all 15 or whatever crazy amount the 3.8 has.
