Hey guys, what would be the best CAI for a 1993? I'm open to any and all suggestions.

ChibiBlackSheep

eBay basically

Alright. I'll look there. But I was curious as to which system would yield the best results.

Very good guide. Might help you. Id give more advice but im more familiar with late model 4th gens with the 3.8 than the earlier ones

fbodyrs96

His would be 3.4 not a 3.8

Ibanezz
10-08-2012, 10:28 PM
That's what I was implying. Im more familiar with products for the 3.8 than I am with the 3.4 or 3.1

I have probably read that article about five times in the past week actually haha. I love the block off plate of the SLP but I really like the under $200 price tag of the K&N.

Just get one of the chromeintakes on eBay, does the same thing for a fraction of the cost and some come with k&n filters.
Btw 3.1 is 3rd gen.

nismo923

Would one of those replace from the throttle body all the way to the filter?

Yes it does. Heres a pic of it installed on my car.

yeah there just isn't any support for custom setups on these cars anymore besides ebay. and the chrome intakes work as well as any other IMO.

I painted mine black but here is mine.

I really do like the chrome tubing. It just looks like a performance part. Now I have a question about the chrome kits though. Where is the sensor that plugs into the stock elbow supposed to go?

ChibiBlackSheep
10-09-2012, 10:28 AM
Your IAT sensor? Looks like XBPR has it shown in his picture.

Good point. I didn't notice that before. Thank you for pointing that out.

yeah its just a hole with a rubber bushing/gromet to hold the sensor. nothing hightech

SlasherVRGR

there's 2 holes in the 3.4 kit. One for iat and one for pcv.

Alright. All of the chrome kits I'm seeing on eBay have only two 3" chunks of aluminum. If I go the chrome route, I want the entire kit. From the throttle body all of the way out. So is there some other pieces that you guys needed to purchase?

Shayne_RS
10-09-2012, 03:26 PM
This? (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-1993-1994-1995-CHEVY-CAMARO-PONTIAC-FIREBIRD-3-4L-V6-FULL-COLD-AIR-INTAKE-/370662581633?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ACamaro&vxp=mtr&hash=item564d362581)

or with the K&N filter (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-93-94-95-CHEVY-CAMARO-PONTIAC-FIREBIRD-3-4-3-4-V6-FULL-COLD-AIR-INTAKE-K-N-F-/330737017314?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Model%3ACamaro%7CYear%3A1993&vxp=mtr&hash=item4d017661e2)

Thank you very much. I now know what to look for. Is it worth the extra money to go with the K & N filter?

Shayne_RS
10-09-2012, 03:35 PM
Uhhhh.. I did. But I dunno if it's worth it.

nismo923
10-09-2012, 03:36 PM
Alright. Fair enough.

xpbr2000
10-09-2012, 03:44 PM
K & N will probably last longer. but as for performance... its probably a wash

nismo923
10-09-2012, 04:08 PM
I will most likely not go K&N for now. That way I can get it sooner. And once the filter needs replaced I'll spend some more then and get the K&N then.

Throwback Bird
10-09-2012, 09:11 PM
I just put a open filter on my stock intake tube, but Id go ahead and get the k&n.

nismo923
10-09-2012, 10:11 PM
That's a pretty inexpensive idea actually. And if I don't go with the K&N, I can probably get it by the end of this month.

nismo923
10-10-2012, 04:41 PM
How much mpg should I be looking to gain by going with a CAI? More than anything, that's why I want to get one. The performance is just a plus.

Throwback Bird
10-10-2012, 06:17 PM
Eeh, wont be enough to notice. May gain a little.

nismo923
10-10-2012, 06:42 PM
Oh... Well more than anything, I was hoping to gain a little fuel life with a CAI. Any input on what I should do to increase mileage then?

fbodyrs96
10-10-2012, 07:24 PM
Not much, drive like an old lady.....lol

nismo923
10-10-2012, 07:42 PM
Lol. Ok. I guess I'll still get the CAI. As long as the chrome kit adds as much horsepower as the K&N, I can get used to an added 18 horse.

Throwback Bird
10-10-2012, 07:46 PM
Who said that?

nismo923
10-10-2012, 07:56 PM
K&N's site did... So what's realistic then?

Ibanezz
10-10-2012, 08:06 PM
18 is very unrealistic. I think the SLP kit for the 5.7 was 10-14 hp max. Idk what the 3.4 would be with the chrome Cai. Maybe 5 or so

fbodyrs96
10-10-2012, 08:11 PM
Good luck with that.

3.8blackmaro
10-10-2012, 08:11 PM
I always got a laugh out of the 18 hp gain. You should expect maybe 3 tops unless your air filter is absolutely filthy.

Throwback Bird
10-10-2012, 08:17 PM
I noticed and little bit better acceleration but, and you can hear it suck the air.

3.8blackmaro
10-10-2012, 08:21 PM

I miss that sound. I used to be able to hear mine before the headers and such. When the red Camaro still had a 3.4 you could really hear it.

10-10-2012, 08:25 PM
Alright. Well thanks for all of the help guys.

Did yours whistle? Mine whistles, lol.

Mine whistles too

The 3.4 did yea, sounded really good. Mine did a bit, but it wasn't as noticeable.

SlasherVRGR

Throwback Bird

my whisper has a alight whistle to it. you wouldnt notice it inside the car unless you heard it before i put the lid on

xpbr2000
10-11-2012, 09:03 AM
yeah i wouldn't take any HP gains as truth with out some hard evidence. lots of companies fudge those numbers.

kdm212
10-11-2012, 09:23 AM
maybe 2hp gain???

fbodyrs96
10-11-2012, 10:13 AM
Mine makes that weird gargling sound, especially when it's cold.

ChibiBlackSheep
10-11-2012, 10:58 AM
If you are hearing a whistle, there might be a small leak somewhere.

They do HP gains on a modified engine with a dirty air filter with the hood closed, then they put a CAI on, leave the hood open, put a giant fan blowing cold air, and get another reading. That's how they do the "dyno proven charts"

CAI's are good supporting modifications. They help bring more dense air into the engine, which can help with a lot of additional modifications.

As for gaining MPGs. Accelerate slow, don't speed, try to brake as little as possible, and raise the PSI in your tires.

Spending money to save MPGs is usually a terrible idea, because it takes a while for the costs to even out.

Thank you for that little bit of insight on everything. I will most likely still do it just because it looks pretty sweet. Now I just need to clean the block and everything else under the hood... DexCool goes everywhere when the water pump goes...
