    Default How to Replace the Water Pump on a 3800II

    If you find yourself in need of replacing your water pump, fear not. The part is cheap ($40 for life time warranty) and the job is a piece of cake. Below is what I did. I'm far from a master mechanic, so your results may vary.

    1. Open the hood and marvel at that wonderful 3800II.



    2. Remove the air intake. If you have a whisper lid or a deleted silencer, this is even easier.



    3. Use a 15mm socket and push down to loosen the tensioner and remove the serpentine belt.



    4. Remove the 4 - 8mm bolts attaching the pulley to the water pump.



    5. Remove the 2 - 1/2" bolts on either side of the pump, the 3 - 3.8" bolts on the top and the single 3/8" both on the bottom. I've been told these should be metric, but these 2 sizes fit best. Once these are removed, the pump should be free. It sits tightly on 2 alignment pegs and might be a little stuck. Use some muscle. Because of the alignment pegs, you need to make sure you all pulling it straight off.



    6. Make sure you clean all the old gasket material off the mounting surface to insure you get a tight fit with the new pump. I used a little 1" putty knife.

    7. Run a smear of high temp RTV around the mounting location (if using a plastic gasket, only use a little RTV in a couple corners). This will help hold the gasket in place.



    8. Install the new pump and replace the bolts. Refer to your auto manual for proper torque specifications (132 in-lbs I believe).



    9. Replace the pulley with the 4 - 8mm bolts.



    10. Now would be a good time to replace your belt if it's aging. Simply route it around the pulleys as it was remove, pull down the tensioner as before and slip the belt around it.



    11. Now replace the air intake, fill 'er up with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.

    That's about all there is to it.

    the correct way to route the serpentine belt is also shown on the driver side shock tower( there is a sticker with a picture to guide you.)

    might want to add to your walkthrough that you will need to bleed the system if there is any air bubbles or you will overheat the engine. To bleed the air out of the system you must loosen the bleeder screw on the thermostat housing until all air is out of system
