I guess the duration depends on the destination, but I am leaning toward 1 day.

What do you think about a route through some state or national parks? They are very kid friendly.

a 1 day sound good to me. Tail of the dragon doesn't lend its self to much else in one day.

Going south is also a bit of a drive.

parks are cool. I'd like a place to take some group pics again.

there should be some good places at the foot hills of the mountains.

The route also depends on who commits to going. Right now it looks to be just you and I

Well, I'm good with whatever size group.
Also, even if we did not go all the way to Deals Gap, I would be good with one of the other scenic roads in that area.
I would rather save the big one for another time if it will mean being able to actually enjoy the drive instead of fighting a big crowd.

What do you think of this:

It would probably be a stretch for either of us to hit in one day, but may not be too bad with an overnight in Chattanooga.

There is also some good info about the Cherohala Skyway:

    That would be something.

This site seems to have a lot of information. It also makes me more concerned about a wayward semi than an overzealous motorcyclist.

Are you still going up there this weekend?

I am familiar with some of the sections of this trail in Alabama:
    http://alabama.travel/trails/a-circle-of-colors

It is not as spectacular as further north but throwing it out there. I have been through the area described in the last section and it would provide some good photo ops. A few weeks back I passed a group of Cobras (AC, not Mustang) cruising through there.

I like that route. The scenic pat looks pretty nice.

thats only a 4 hr cruise starting in huntsville

stay over in chattanooga isn't a terrible thing. but from my place thats 12 hours of driving total which isn't that bad.

from huntsville thats not a bad run. Maybe start in huntsville early saturday. that you wouldn't need a stay over.
