    Default 1996 sebring convertible

    Hey guys, been a while. Sold the bird last fall and was too ashamed to report back here
    Anyway got my claws on a 96 sebring convertible with 2,5 auto, imported from the states in 2004. It's quite rough-looking - interior quite ripped and so on, but drives nicely and feels faster (and a lot smoother) than my bird did! too bad the summer is ending...

    no need to be ashamed. I understand that people have to let go of vehicles sometimes. Doesn't mean i like it but I don't judge LOL

    its nice to see youre still rocking US cars.

    Just about any convertible is okay in my book. Hope the Sebring does well for you.

    I like Sebrings but not 2.5 Mitsubishi engines in Chrysler products.

    Had a '96 dodge avenger at one point in life. Was fun to drive, but had the 2.0 Mitsubishi. The same I4 they put in the eclipse and many other cars that Chrysler carries. It was crap, it was slow, blew a head gasket had loads of problems with it. If you are going to get an eclipse/avenger/sebring the 2.5 is the way to go

    The Avenger was an Eclipse with a different body though. My point was avoid anything Mitsubishi in a Chrysler. They had the worst of both worlds. The eclipse didn't get the 2.5 BTW, it had a 3.0, same as the eclipse. That's a popular swap BTW but I was a Mopar guy before switching to GM. I had a 96 Stratus and it was horrible. Everything Mitsubishi in there failed.

    That's funny, but true. I was actually shopping for an Eclipse when I found the Camaro.

    Had some trouble with the car - when first awoken after the winter, started right up but the alternator was STUCK. The outer casing had developed cracks and somehow forced the rotor inside stuck. After 2 weeks of sitting outside and replacing the alternator, didn't start. No spark.
    Some clues told me it was the distributor. Ordered a new one from the states. Installed. $*%+ still nothing.
    Spent hours diagnosing the culprit and finally gave up. Called in a tech guy with proper gadgets. He diagnosed the fault in 10 mins, not even needing the gadgets

    It was the ignition switch, that let me crank the engine but didn't let juice to go to the ignition circuit. He noticed the fuel gauge drop to 0 when cranking.
    Wiggled the key while cranking and at one point it came to life!
    Super happy as I was fearing I might've shorted something out while replacing alternator...

    oh man. those electrical gremlins are the worst.

    its good you found the problem. at least it was completely broken instead of kind of work sometimes and leave you stranded.

    OK gonna keep you guys in the loop about that there sebring. :-)

    At one time in the summer the car started dying at random times and it got worse with erratic sputtering on highway speeds etc. Threw a map code. cleaned map to no avail... went to a trusted mechanic who diagnosed that the car cut out when he tappd on the map plug. He then slightly bent the pins and voila. Man, the things on old cars... :-D

    Then on one fine warm day I was cruising on the motorway, top down, good jazz blasting. On the parallel pedestrian road there were roller skaters and such and I thought about the joys of driving a convertible on a day as fine as this and about other finer joys of life ... and you know there's trouble ahead when thoughts get real good :-D
    Next moment i glanced at the instrument cluster and the damn water temp was peaking!
    Pulled over right away, turned the car off and opened hood.
    There I was - a scene out of a hollywood movie with vapor coming from engine bay.
    Anyway the water pump failed and I was lucky to not have the thing ovrheat too much; also the belt got damaged by the water pump pulley seizing. Had new everything put on and got me set back by 530 euros. At least it is still alive and well and about to be put away for winter -- since fall is making its presence felt.
