    Default Budget Build

I have $1,000.00 to spend on the engine compartment.

Any suggestions that you have tried or have seen done for that amount.

definitely grab some headers. for a 3.4 i'm not sure what the options for internals are but a cam might fall under the 1000 dollar mark if you do the work yourself. the question is are you wanting more HP? if so you may need to look at turbo. you might be able to grab some good deals but 1000 will be stretching what you can do in turbo. but turbo will be a good jump in HP.

some of the 3.4 guys may drop in and give their 2 cents.

what are your goals? if you just have 1000 to spend on the car in general there are many other things that would make a bigger difference that you could use that 1000 on. suspension and exhaust are 2 things that make a big difference on the ride that don't cost arms and legs. Just throwing out options to think about. Its really down to your goals that you want. HP, ride quality, etc.

I'm sure you could go forced induction for 1k if you talk to the right people and find the right deals.

Intake and exhaust would be #1 and 2 on the list. #3 would be cam and 1.6 rockers. Though the 3.4 has a more aggressive cam than the 2.8 and 3.1 factory.

My car can go faster with another cam for sure but I am trying to see what can be squeezed out of the stock cam with the 1.6 rockers.

You'll probably have a few more chime in here shortly.

Come to think of it, you could probably consider a hybrid swap.

RWD block FWD top end and pistons.

Not planning on racing it so more HP is not neccessary. Just looking to give it more of a fun factor. The only thing the interior needs is a new headliner that is coming out of a different fund.

I did see on here about cold air intakes and porting and polishing the throtle body.

I have a guy that I can that can do the work and doesn't charge labor as long as I pay for the parts up front.

P&P is going to be unnoticeable really. you will know its done and it may look better but its not going to make a noticable different with no other mods. the dyno might be able to notice it.

A free flowing intake (cold or not) will help it run better for sure. and you can make those look really good under the hood. headers look good as well. plus they will add low end torque. IMO CAI and Headers for sure and add a nice sounding muffler. you'll be happy.

I can honestly say it won't give you measurable HP, but it does do quite a bit for throttle response. I've done my ls1, 5.3 and 4.3 all by myself with some aero tricks done to the throttle blade (not knife edging) and the response is definitely more crisp feeling. Also if by some means the blade isn't aligned properly before you do it(the 5.3 truck wasn't) you can align it better.

All in all if you can do it yourself and you have a general idea of what to do, I'd do it.. it's free!

After going through the engine I determined it was good enough for now. So I decided to replace the battery, alternator and the A/C condenser and hoses. I know not the most fun build but practical. I also decided that the interior and exterior was what need the most attention. I bought a new headliner and will have the paint touched up. Unfortunately I forgot to take the before pictures but will be posting some after pictures.

Cheapest performance boosts would be aluminum heads (get them from a junked minivan), a small hit of nitrous, and of course, just getting the engine in "like mama GM intended" working order first.
